What are you dealing with?
What to say right now
Use these phrases when you want to keep the conversation respectful and focused.
- “Can you clarify what you mean?”
- “I want to make sure I understand the policy correctly.”
- “I’m going to follow up in writing so I don’t miss anything.”
- “Please direct me to the correct person for this concern.”
Use these responses if someone is being rude or crossing a line.
- “I want to keep this respectful.”
- “I’m not comfortable continuing this in this tone.”
- “If this needs to be addressed, I’d like a supervisor involved.”
- “I’ll follow up through email.”
If you feel overloaded, slow the interaction down.
- “I need a moment to think.”
- “I’m not able to respond clearly right now.”
- “Can we revisit this later today?”
- “I need to put this in writing.”
Use this to keep things focused on procedure instead of personal conflict.
- “Can you show me where that is stated in policy?”
- “Who should I speak to about enforcement?”
- “I want to follow the correct process.”
- “Can you confirm this in writing?”
