What to say right now

Use these phrases when you want to keep the conversation respectful and focused.

  • “Can you clarify what you mean?”
  • “I want to make sure I understand the policy correctly.”
  • “I’m going to follow up in writing so I don’t miss anything.”
  • “Please direct me to the correct person for this concern.”

Use these responses if someone is being rude or crossing a line.

  • “I want to keep this respectful.”
  • “I’m not comfortable continuing this in this tone.”
  • “If this needs to be addressed, I’d like a supervisor involved.”
  • “I’ll follow up through email.”

If you feel overloaded, slow the interaction down.

  • “I need a moment to think.”
  • “I’m not able to respond clearly right now.”
  • “Can we revisit this later today?”
  • “I need to put this in writing.”

Use this to keep things focused on procedure instead of personal conflict.

  • “Can you show me where that is stated in policy?”
  • “Who should I speak to about enforcement?”
  • “I want to follow the correct process.”
  • “Can you confirm this in writing?”

I am requesting support related to a medical condition that affects my ability to work under current conditions. I would like to discuss possible accommodations that would help me perform my job safely and effectively.

What should I do next?

If this is a policy issue: ask for the policy in writing, confirm who enforces it, and follow up by email.
If this is a coworker conflict: stay neutral, document the interaction, and use a supervisor if needed.
If this is a medical/access issue: request an accommodation and explain how it affects work.
If this is affecting your mental health: use grounding tools and seek support if symptoms are worsening.
If this feels unsafe: leave the area if you can and contact appropriate support immediately.

Where to go for help

  • Workplace policy
  • Breaks and basic needs
  • Accommodations
  • HR or management escalation
  • Union / employee advocate options
  • Documentation and retaliation concerns

If work is affecting your appetite, sleep, mood, energy, or ability to function, support may be needed beyond the workplace.

  • Crisis support
  • Therapy / counseling
  • Peer support
  • Stress and burnout resources
  • Grief and emotional support services

If it’s about policy, schedule, access, or enforcement, it may be a work issue. If it’s causing distress, panic, shutdown, or burnout, it may also be a mental health issue. You do not need to choose just one category if both fit.

Closing note

You do not have to solve everything at once. Pick the smallest next step: clarify, document, request, pause, or reach out.
